However, I want this game to get more attention and praise, because I absolutely loved this game. Sega needs to support this studio, and they need to continue their games. The play style is easy to understand, there's no Final Fantasy style ATB charges or confusing enemy staggering guidelines. The game tries to mimic the simpler straightforward Dragon Quest-like gameplay (which is also referenced frequently throughout the game and a ton of grinding). The item acquisition and upgrade logic is also pretty straightforward (though requires a lot of in-game currency), and there aren't any convoluted side-quests that need to be accomplished. In all honesty, the gameplay is almost too simplistic. But it is addictive because of its ease and simplicity.
The characters caught me by surprise, as I didn't think I'd like them so much, particularly the main character Kasuga Ichiban, who is very different than Kiryu. But in general, all the playable characters (as well as a couple of the NPCs) are extremely likeable. The story itself is also much easier to follow than Kiryu's Yakuza series, which oftentimes are littered with betrayals, rival gangs, multiple backstories, and whatnot (basically, soap operas). So newcomers should not have a problem following the content.
Most of the minigames are still there, which are always great (I even learned how to play most of them, but I am still very confused by Pachinko and Shogi). And like every Yakuza game, there are side-job type games. One of the biggest differences though is actually the "adult" content, which has been very toned down here. The previous Yakuza games were more apparent in the red-light type of activities (e.g., saunas, videos, dating, etc.). The dating and hostess bar aspects are still here, but they are much more graphically toned-down versions compared to Kiryu's Yakuza. This is neither a complaint nor a praise, but to each their own...
Lastly, newcomers should be able to enjoy this game thoroughly, but there are so many easter eggs, cameos, and references to the past series that very much made me embrace this game even more. There are several moments that really pulled on my emotions purely out of nostalgia. Yakuza 4 and 5 are still my favorites in the series, but LAD is easily just beneath them.
If you're even remotely interested in the Yakuza series, or enjoy RPG's, get this game. Support Ryu Ga Gotoku studios and Sega.
I think in anything else this would bother me, but Yakuza Like A Dragon is Guy Ritchie's Earthbound.
The characters are sharp. The storytelling is strong. The content of the game is absolutely buckwild. And it does all this against a modern backdrop of economic struggle that feels more grounded than anything else I've ever played.
Yes, this is a game that revels in absolute nonsense, but also when it takes a minute to be serious, it hits like a gut punch.
I'm talking around the story because I don't want to spoil any of the beats, but if you've enjoyed the stories in any of the other Yakuza games, this one's a little heavier. I don't think it'll put Yakuza fans off, and there *are* plenty of references to the other games, and the substories pull off some excellent comedy. The line between old-timer friendly and newcomer friendly is tight, but I do think this game walks it, and you can play it as your first entry into the series.
RPG-mechanics-wise, Like A Dragon doesn't feel perfectly flat, but this might be where it's weakest. It's trying something new, and it's putting all its effort into not screwing up, and I think it does that but at the expense of really shining. My socks haven't been knocked off by the combat system, but battles are still fun, and the minigames and subsystems are a blast.
Overall, if you like rpgs, you like extremely human stories, you like gonzo weirdness, or you just like the Yakuza series, give this a try.
Chrono Trigger's been my number one favorite rpg for like twenty years, and this thing just unseated it, so yeah. Strong recommend.
Even if you have never played a Yakuza game before, you should get this. It's that good.
It's not a graphic powerhouse or anything, but the game is just plain fun.
Combat is turn based which is unlike other Yakuza games, but it works well. Occasionally the environment gets a little annoying ans characters get caught on things briefly, but overall it's a solid battle system.
Side Quests are plentiful. There are tons and tons of side quests and they are really great. Who doesn't like feeding people Kimichi and watching what happens? I have found one side quest that I am unable to access for some reason. I can't talk to the person and it won't trigger the quest. Seems bugged, but everything else has been fine. You also can do Kart racing, quests where you are the hero for people and run your own business. There is truly a massive amount of side content from the main story.
Main story is fun as well. Some nice little twists and turns.
I've been playing the game on a Playstation 5 and haven't encountered any issues. Supposedly the PS5 version of this is coming in 2021 at some point, but no firm date. I did read that the saves from the PS4 version won't transfer over for some reason though. So, be aware of that if you anticipate starting it and moving over to the PS5 version. I figure I will be done with it before that version is out so not a big deal to me.
Highly recommend this game. Might be my favorite game that came out in 2020. If not my favorite, it's definitely near the top.
