Regain System

When you take damage from enemies, counter-attack the enemy within a certain period of time to regain some of your lost HP. The damage taken initially turns orange, indicating you can earn it back if you are quick enough. Hesitate too long and you’ll lose that health for good.

Offensive Parry

Bloodborne encourages characters to say on the offensive, using an equipped firearm as a staggering tool. By unloading a shot right before the enemy's attack lands, the tables are instantly turned, leaving them staggered and open to a devastating Visceral Attack.

Messengers

These small creatures have crept out of a nightmare, and while they may not look too friendly, they accompany hunters, follow their orders, and take care of messages left for others.

Traps

Both a grave and a place of slumber, these dungeons are not a place where visitors are welcomed. Those who venture here quickly find this out thanks to the many fatal traps hidden throughout the tunnels and halls, such as these guillotine blades covered in the blood of unsuspecting Hunters.

Bloody Awesome (updated)
My initial post is going to be short because I am not going to regurgitate 'professional' reviews and I didn't have the luxury of playing a pre-release version of the game. However I will update this review and keep updating it until I reach the bitter end._____________________________________________________NOTE:Having reached 'the bitter ends', i.e. both the deepest dungeon and experienced the end of game and then progressed to NG+3, earned the Platinum (PSN ID: the_DAO), I've updated the content below to reflect my first month of Bloodborne playing._____________________________________________________These are my general impressions:' Awesome AI. Maybe other games have better AI but none that I'm aware of. Bosses manage to be unpredictable.' Impressive graphics, expected on the current generation of consoles. It's 1080p at 30 fps and no frame drop, as far as I can tell.' Fluid motion.' Fast, very fast when compared to the previous Souls games.' A lot, and I mean A LOT of 'Souls' DNA, see below' Intriguing weapons and new combat tactics are needed to prevail.' Difficult, but that's expected and difficulty should be overcome with patience and accumulated experience... the sweeter the rewards.' The dungeons add a lot of content - some say it's repetitive but I find it extremely challenging._______________________________________________________SIMILARITIES with SOULS GAMES- no specific or rigidly defined classes- same health and stamina bars- bonfires- bonfire teleport system, central hub but world sections loosely connected- blood stains- three levels of upgrade shards with the final upgrade, the blood rock, extremely rare- crystal lizards by another name- parries and backstabs but done somewhat differently- seeing the outlines of fellow hunters playing the game, always encouraging- ability to leave messages on the ground for other players to see- some elevators look exactly like the ones in Dark Souls- rag doll physics are back for enemy corpses which is fun (Dark Souls, Demon's Souls)- the hair ornament (Demon's Souls) is backDIFFERENCES- significantly faster- fewer weapons and weapons are specifically right-hand and left-hand- slightly different controls for combat- fewer armor sets- almost no shields and the one I found was just useless- PvP can be easily avoided if not specifically sought, I had less then half a dozen unwanted invasions in more than one month of play- covenants or what passes for covenants are greatly de-emphasized- this game has runes- some different methods for health regeneration- not a lot of magic for the player but some significant on the enemy side- Chalice dungeons, some procedurally generated add an enormous amount of content- lore can be easily traced to Lovecraft's universe - worth reading, can get near all of his works for 99 cents on the Kindle_______________________________________________________PVP and co-op don't seem to be as popular as they are in Demon's Souls or the Dark Souls games. Or at least not yet. I had a number of good co-op experiences when I offered to help. However, I was never able to either help someone or get help from someone inside a Chalice dungeon and I was only invaded twice. It's possible that this may change as many of us finish the game, do the dungeons, complete new game plus and are looking for 'more'.Meanwhile, all I can say is that if you have a PS4, this is THE game or at least it's the game I've been waiting for ever since launch. Only hope that they are going to do a sequel for all platforms so that 'everybody' can enjoy this.

Infected townspeople, werewolves, giant monsters, blood, violence... and top hats.

I experimented with Demon's & Dark Souls and after punching a hole in the wall I put the controller down and played Borderlands/Tomb Raider to realign and find my center. I took a chance with Bloodborne, and while it is extremely difficult, it is not the game, it is me which needs to attempt a different way to approach the gaming situation. Bosses are difficult and the combat is extremely smart, making you avoid just running up and slashing and more observing the environment and studying the enemies moves and reactions. If you exclusively play Call of Duty, turn back now! You won't last 2-minutes.

What I love about this game is the style, it's like nothing I've ever seen or played before. Unlike Dark Souls, it's less of a "D&D style/living in your parents basement", and more beautifully dark and violent. Dark Souls is good, and I also played the recently released Dark Souls 2 for the PS4, however the graphics, style and substance don't even come close to Bloodborne. Later this year there will be a Bloodborne DLC expansion and I'm hoping for a sequel come out one day as I am unsure if I can go back to usual everyday gameplay of other games after playing Bloodborne. It's opened my eyes to a new world of gaming which I never knew existed.

Pros:
+ Gorgeous graphics and level design. Open world enough to keep it non-linear.
+ Smart combat, environments, AI and weapons.
+ The style leaves me speechless. Something new with class & sophistication.
+ Great sense of achievement when you complete an area.
+ When you die, and you will die, every door you opened or everything explored is saved. However your Blood Echoes (souls) are dropped and often picked up by enemies. You then need to replay that area to re-kill enemies and collect your Blood Echoes back. You can then go back to your HUB (Hunter's Dream) and spend your Blood Echoes on upping your characters stats.
+ There is an endless amount of things to do, explore and upgrade. So many items, objects and side-quests.
+ Stuck somewhere? No problem, sign in as "Online" and ring a bell and others will come to your aide. A new type of online/multiplayer style. Other players (when requested) may join your game, help, then leave. Also helps with the game to avoid extreme frustration as having someone to help is a huge benefit at times.
+ While in the Hunter's Dream, there are two lines of gravestones. Half are for your levels, the other are for dungeons which you can unlock and play single-player or online. I only used online when I got stuck and needed help. I believe there are 35-total dungeons/chalice dungeons.

Cons:
- No game pause feature.
- About 25-30 second loading time.
- No blocking attacks, however you must learn the combat style.
- No tutorial, simply thrown in the world to struggle to survive. However this is the best way I learn.
- I did get stuck on an object once, but utilizing something in my inventory (Bold Hunter's Mark) I respawned back to the nearest lantern (save checkpoint).
- Rag-doll effect on dead enemies. They get stuck on you & bounce around as you run.

Tips:
*Play one area again and again to collect as many Blood Echoes ("souls" used to up character stats) as possible. Also collect as many Blood Vials (health) as possible so you can beat the bosses.
*Explore!!! There is so much to see and do which is initially hidden. You can open gates which can shortcut your trek to the boss or closer to an area of interest.
*Take your time, you cannot rush through this game. You can spend 100's of hours playing this game and still only scratch the surface. We'll worth the cost, playability and replay factor.

Over-all it is a fun, extremely challenging game. When I died 60+ times after meeting the first boss, I wondered what I got myself into. However the style and substance of this game is like nothing I have ever seen before. After taking my time and exploring everything, I completed the game in about 90-hours and I'm not halfway through new game plus. The second play through I am seeing and finding so much I missed the first time around. It is honestly probably the smartest game I have ever played, however it took me some time and a lot of exploring to understand what everything was and what I had to do. There is so much to explore, and even initially on the surface it seems basic, there are so many hidden areas and uses for things I don't even know where to begin. If you purchase this game, I recommend spending hours and hours on the first main area, before the first boss attacking enemies, upping your Blood Echoes so you can increase the abilities of your character. It takes time, but it is very rewarding and ultimately fun.

Highly recommended, if you have the time and patience.

***UPDATE***
I'm now working on NewGame++ and am still wildly enjoying the game. I worked through most of if not all of the dungeons and I'm one trophy away from platinum. I missed this the first two play-throughs due to a slight glitch, which the latest update has corrected.

I had been planning to purchase a copy of the game for some time now and as soon as possible once I bought a Playstation 4. Fortunately I was patient enough to come across a few sales. PSN had it on sale, but Amazon was a bit of a better deal, which was six-dollars cheaper (pretty decent...right?) I ordered my copy and was prompted with the option of Free-One Day shipping guarantee, how could I refuse such a sweet deal? My copy arrived early 8AM next morning! I've had it for a week now and I haven't been able to put it down since.

I have been a huge fan of the Demon's/Dark Souls series for quite a while now, having only played Demon's Souls, this makes me feel right at home. (I now plan to purchase Dark Souls and the Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin Remaster) Being the "Souls Successor" it is, there are more than a handful of really nice references to Demon's Souls for instance: Patches is back and up to no good and "The Doll" within the Hunter's Dream is voiced by the very same actress as The Maiden in Black within The Nexus, just to name a few. Just like any Souls game: This one doesn't hold your hand every step of the way and by no means will enemies hold any punches, you're dropped into a world where anything and just about everything that moves can potentially kill you. It is difficult, yes but unbeatable? No, far from it. It saddens me to see so many reviews by users on Amazon giving the game 1-Star because of how "difficult" they claim it to be. People complain about games being "too easy," games being "too hard" and when there's a game such as this that respects your intelligence enough to assume you'd understand by now how to approach the game, slowly and strategically to adapt to the difficulty of progression... You give it a 1/5 and say it's "too hard" and that automatically makes it a horrible game?! Pathetic and naive. You just suck at the game and you're learning absolutely nothing from your previous attempts.

Bloodborne's world and its inhabitant foes, traps, etc. are unforgiving, this game and the Souls titles are all about Trial & Error so you must learn from your past mistakes and play things smart. Strategically approaching new foes, learning their attack patterns, what makes them tick and exploiting their weaknesses is key to your survival. The combat is fast-paced and mechanics are a huge advancement and definitely a step-forward in the right direction! Something I've noticed that players have been disregarding with their reviews was the new "Trick-Weapons" idea that is a fresh new concept that I found very interesting. These new weapon types immediately reminded me of Monster Hunter and weapons such as the "Switch-Axe" and it's alternate modes. I hope to see From Software capitalize on this idea, it's quite promising. The games environments look gorgeous! The story is quite deep and interesting to keep you involved in everything. Unique multiplayer and PvP. Enemies and bosses are significantly diverse, well designed and challenging. Not only are things difficult but also rewarding! So don't be so quick to give up!

There has also been DLC confirmed for release within the near future, which I am gladly looking forward to.

Bloodborne isn't for everyone.

If you consider yourself something along the lines of a casual gamer or someone that likes games that require less time to devote in and less skill mastery, then this might not be the game for you; However, if you're someone a bit more on the hardcore-side of games, that likes a challenge then I'd recommend it.

The hunt is on tonight. Now, get out there and slit some throats!
